Learn about our use of Jiu Jitsu to help empower survivors of DV and SA, and help prevent that from happening.
With a history of community service, both owner Anthony Garcia and Head Instructor Professor Brett Werner wanted to do something to help people through the power of Jiu Jitsu. Not only does it teach true self-defense, but it can help a person regain their confidence.
All Trauma Survivor classes are priced as "pay what you can." If you cannot afford them, then we will not ask you to pay.
At Lionheart Jiu Jitsu, it is one of our stated goals to work with our local communities, non-profit foundations, and individuals to help survivors of DV, SA, and any other traumatic experience. We take many steps to instill confidence in our facility being trauma informed. This list is not exhaustive but includes many of the things that we are doing to help be a supportive environment for healing:
-The curriculum is on a pre-planned rotation, so you know what to expect from all beginner/self-defense classes. You can look ahead at descriptions of what will be taught days (and even weeks) in advance.
-We always teach to avoid the fight if possible.
-We make a clear separation between sport and self-defense Jiu Jitsu.
-We delay sparring until intermediate/advanced level classes.
-Our facility gets cleaned regularly, and the mats are cleaned every night.
-We have rules on proper gym attire and good hygiene, e.g., no bare chests: rash guards or T-shirts must always be worn.
-Since we operate using a punch card style system, you can stop or take a break from attending classes whenever you need time.
-In Beginner classes, we try to use self-defense-oriented labels, i.e., aggressor and survivor. We also will try to tie in overviews of real-world scenarios so you can see where a technique or position would be used.
-During class, we are very flexible about allowing people space to focus on themselves without any hesitation. We will also be supportive of any request to opt out of doing a certain technique or movement. We want you to be comfortable.
-If possible, we will always pair lower-ranking students with advanced students.
-You are always allowed to choose who you spar with, or to decide not to spar at all.
